Summary: Shin'ichi gets away for a while
Fic: Lunar Eclipse
When Shin'ichi was fourteen he got his first taste of freedom. Instead of hanging around while his parents ducked fans and dodged editors, he decided to get away for a while himself. Whith this in mind, he packed for a week and caught a boat to a place called Tsukikage Island.
Once he'd stashed his suitcase in his room, Shin'ichi decided to poke around a bit, see what he could learn. When he reached the deck he was stopped by a rather androgynous looking girl. "Excuse me, do you have the time?"
"Three fifteen," Shin'ichi replied with a glance at his watch.
"Oh thank God," the girl said, smiling in relief. "I'm going to meet the mayor at five and I was afraid I was going to be late."
Shin'ichi nodded, processing the information. "You're going to meet the mayor?"
"Yes. I just got out of med school and was hoping to get a job on the island. I heard that they don't have many doctors and usually have to go to the mainland for treatments."
"A noble ambition." Shin'ichi quirked a smile.
The girl smiled back. "I'm glad you think so, mister..."
"Kudo Shin'ichi, detective," he supplied. "Though I'm a little young yet to be called 'mister'. And you are, doctor?"
"Asai Narumi. It's a pleasure." Narumi's eyes twinkled. "You can call me 'Narumi' if you like. So what brings you to the island?"
Shin'ichi shrugged. "I wanted to get away for a while. Tsukikage seemed like a nice enough place to go."
"Mm. So it does."
They passed the rest of the boat ride in idle chatter, swapping forensic knowledge and stories. When the boat docked, Shin'ichi glanced sidelong at Narumi. "Mind if I tag along with you? I don't have to be at my hotel until ten and it would be nice to spend time with someone I know while I'm here."
Narumi smiled brightly. "Not at all. I'd be delighted to have you along, Shin'ichi-kun."
Their first stop was the community center where Narumi met with the mayor. Shin'ichi waited outisde with his luggage while they talked. He was startled by the shout of "Asou Seiji?!" from inside, but refrained from entering. He listened carefully, though, and made out a thud, as if something heavy had hit the floor. Still he did not enter. Then piano music started and Shin'ichi could restrain his curiosity no longer; he opened the door and looked inside.
In the room where they had been meeting, Narumi sat on a bench playing Moonlight Sonata, tears running down her cheeks. On the floor beside the piano lay the body of the man Shin'ichi could only assume was the mayor, eyes open and hand clutching at his heart. Narumi looked up when Shin'ichi entered the room. "He's dead," she choked out, voice cracking on the second word. "He started having problems when he realized I was--I was..." She broke off and sobbed. Shin'ichi took her in his arms and murmured soothingly.
"He--killed my father," Narumi whispered with a hiccup. "Him and four other men. And all because he wanted to do the right thing!"
"It's okay, Narumi-san," Shin'ichi said helplessly, rubbing her back. "It'll all be okay soon."
"No it's not!" Narumi looked up at Shin'ichi, her eyes swolen from crying and cheeks tearstained and grimy. "My name's not really Asai Narumi. It's Asou Seiji, and I'm really a boy."
Shin'ichikissed the teartracks on his face. "It's okay," he reassured Seiji, "I like you either way."
Unable to hold onto his composure any longer, Seiji clung to the younger man and allowed himself to cry.
--End--
Okay, I was pretty lax with my notes for this one, so please forgive any mistakes I made. Also, apologies for lateness, but this just didn't want to be written. *wince*
