Wanted: Help with a Kaito/Shinichi essay
Aug. 16th, 2005 09:42 amUmmm... hiya. I'm Gen and I think I've seen most of you over at
manycases1truth. I haven't posted anything here before because... well, I'm a putz. *g*
Anyway,
clover_magic and myself are collaborating on the Kaito/Shinichi essay for
ship_manifesto and we're looking for some input from the other Detective Conan fans out there, especially of the Kaito/Shinichi pairing variety. So, would you mind helping us out here by answering the following questionnaire?
1) Why Kaito/Shinichi? What is it about their dynamics that you like? And this could be either in a romantic sense or just as two people who challenge each other. Feel free to throw canon examples at me too.
2) What is your favorite canon moment between the two?
3) For those that do ship Kaito/Shinichi, what led you to shipping them? A particular moment in canon, a fanfic, you just wanted to put the two prettiest guys in the series together? *g*
4) Links, please! This is probably the most important. I'm looking for links to fanfics (if you know if any Kaito/Shinichi fanfics or even good gen/het fanfics that focuses on both of them), Detective Conan information sites, fanart, anything, really. Whatever you would give to someone new to the fandom or new to Kaito/Shinichi.
Thanks, I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to help us out.

Date: 2005-08-17 03:12 am (UTC)And you should! It's interesting sitting down and thinking about why do I love this pairing. And then finding the right words to express it. Plus, I'm really curious as to why you love your pairing and how similar it is to why I love mine.

Date: 2005-08-17 01:50 am (UTC)While I don't really ship any particular DC yaoi pairing (In DC I'm a canon pairing girl at heart, although I'm also a 'if it's written well, I like it' kinda girl too), I think one of the dynamics I like about Kaito/Shin'ichi is a point that
While the chemistry between them would be interesting to watch (especially considering that Shin'ichi's more serious and Kaito's a class clown), it's more about the intelligent interaction they would have as the detective and the thief. In SoG, Hakuba says something about how he likes Kid because of the intellectual challenge as well as the chemistry, both of which are important in any relationship.
I also enjoy the idea of them being friends and teasing each other: Shin'ichi about Kaito breaking the law, Kaito about how 'Mr. Great Detective' can't catch him. Of course, I also hold to the belief that if Shin'ichi, Heiji and Saguru knew the reason behind the Kid heists, they'd immediately jump ship to help out.

Icka's The Price You Pay (http://www.mischif.net/monogatari/PYP/index.htm) series is excellent, although non-yaoi, the teaser for the third part is a conversation between Kaito and Shin'ichi that would sum up their relationship perfectly.
Another two of Icka's series, the Game and Trick (http://www.mischif.net/monogatari/gametrick.htm) Trilogies are wonderful examples of how Shin'ichi and Kaito would act with one another.

Date: 2005-08-17 03:28 am (UTC)I'm sorry, I'll do better! *g* I did post something back in June, it's just July I was dealing with my pet series that refused to cooperate with me.

Date: 2005-08-17 02:06 pm (UTC)The reason why I tolerate Kaito/Shin'ichi is also part of why I enjoy Kaito/Hakuba so much--you get both sides of a heist, both shades of grey (to steal from Icka), and they're just different enough to drive each other up the wall short of killing one another.
After all, it's not a hatred with Hakuba: it's an obsession. I mean, he came from ENGLAND to chase the boy. ^__^
And I understand about those pet series. They can get annoying, can't they? :: chuckles ::
death to the pet series!!! *glares at Saguru and Kaito*
Date: 2005-08-18 08:40 pm (UTC):: BLUSHES ::
Somedays kinda sit there and go 'OMG!! what the hell have we done to the fandom?! aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh' and kinda panic. ~_~
Didn't mean to, I swear!!!
Also realised we lost any and all deniablity when we started this community. :P
-the entire reason why I got into reading the yaoi fics was at the time, they were the better written ones, because it usually takes a bit more maturity to step outside of the conventional to see the slashy stories. (now this isn't nessaciarly so and I've seen ficcers who write yaoi because it's fashionable. >P )
But definately noticing that the majority of the doujinshi out there are either Kaito/Shin'ichi or Heiji/Shin'ichi. (Kaito/Heiji sadly isn't very common, and anything with Hakuba is damn hard to find)
Think my favourite two Kaito/Shin'ichi doujin stories involve the artist joking about their sameness... In one, Shin'ichi wakes up one morning and it looks like there's a mirror right next to him.
Turn the page and Shin'ichi's screaming and pushing Kaito off of his bed. Kaito laughs and runs an hand through is hair, making it stick up again.
The other one involves Heiji calling Hakuba over to the house and you find Kaito and Shin'ichi fast asleep, sharing the bed. Their hair is messy and it's hard to spot who is who.
Heiji and Hakuba smile at each other, they're detectives, they can figure it out. They each pick up their twin and take them to the respective homes.
-of course, the last pages of the book are Shin'ichi and Kaito screaming because Kaito wakes up to find Heiji in bed with him and Shin'ichi's in Hakbua's bed.
Oops.
Okay, rambling. *wanders off*

:: dies :: Oh holy crap, I need to get that one.

Date: 2005-08-19 05:27 am (UTC)Why haven't anyone written a foursome with Kaito, Hakuba, Heiji and Shinichi? I mean, they get paired ever which way already, why not make it all easier and put them all in the same pairing?
Just wondering.
Re: death to Saguru and Kaito
Date: 2005-08-19 05:16 pm (UTC)Have had a
smallplunnie involving them in pretty much a foursome in the past. (we don't write lemons, but we damn sure read 'em!)After some thought, has pretty much boiled down to 'who does what where' and how long before people got damn tired. -With Saguru and Kaito sniggering in the background. (they started it)
And after that it was kinda boring.
Heiji/Kaito/Saguru tends to be more amusing, IMHO.
Speaking of which, need to bug Mel Redcap about finishing her fic with that pairing. (she started it!!!)

Date: 2005-08-18 10:20 pm (UTC)A friend of mine wrote a really interesting fic (and a sequel to that) about KaitoxShin´ichi. (Why is it written with an apostrophe, by the way? In the German edition of the Manga it´s written just "Shinichi".) If you are able to speak the language, I would recommend that story (called "Smaragdener Fluch") and its sequel ("Desdemona").
Uhm, about your other questions:
1.) Well, I´m more of a HakubaxKaito shipper, but I´d say the main common bond between the two would be their problems with the BO. Well, at least that´s what I could imagine to bring those two together.
Other than that I also believe that the mental challenge the other one provides, would certainly attract both of them. I actually think that this is even truer for KaitoxShinichi than for HakubaxKaito, because Shin´ichi, especially while he is still Conan, is as much of a mystery to Kaito as Kaitou Kid is to Shinichi.
Shinichi might also be attracted to Kaito/Kaitou Kid, because as a magician Kaito is used to quite a lot of things. The way he speaks to Conan indicates, that he has no problems seeing the young man behind the facade of the child. While Conan has got quite a lot of people who are willing to accept him as himself even in miniature form, I sometimes get the feeling that especially Heiji and Shin´ichi´s mother get some kind of kick out of treating him like a child.
Shin´ichi might feel that a guy who has no problems disguising as a girl and who does the strangest magical things, would probably not be very impressed/shocked/surprised by someone turning into some sort of "mini-me", but rather understanding instead.
Of course there is always the balance-thing: Kaito has got a strong sense of humour, something Shin´ichi pretty much lacks, so they would balance each other out very nicely.
Unfortunately, I still have some problems with this pairing, because I think that Shin´ichi, in the end, might have problems having a relationship with a thief.
Hakuba´s habit of questioning the criminals as to why they did it, indicates to me, that he might be willing to accept Kaito´s criminal "career" as long as he can give a good reason and continues to give the stolen goods back.
Shin´ichi´s motto "there is only one truth" and his refusal to let a criminal get away even through death (although his reasoning for that is differently, I still believe part of his reasons to be the thought that a criminal has to be punished by human law for what he/she did) makes me think that he might not be able to accept the Kaitou Kid as being part of Kaito.
At least not for very long.
2.) My favourite canon movement between the two is the scene, where Kid tosses the lady´s underwear at Conan...^^"
And of course Kid´s statement about Hakuba and Shinichi/Conan being "like an old lover you wish you´d never met".
(Well, at least that´s what he says in German...^^")
Uhm... I can´t really say much to question 3 and 4, so I´ll end my post here. I hope I was able to help you a bit!

Either 'Shinichi' or 'Shin'ichi' is correct. They're both valid romanji spellings.
I tend towards the 'Shin'ichi' spelling because of one of the openings, where you have both Shin'ichi and Conan looking up towards the screen, with their names in romanji in the back. They use the apostrophe there, so I've used the apostrophe ever since.
As far as I know, m'pretty much the only one who does. #^^# Ysabet and Becky have commented that they use Shinichi because they're too lazy for the extra key stroke. ^^;;

Date: 2005-08-19 07:05 pm (UTC)Kudo's name is written as the kanji characters "Shin" and "ichi", literally meaning "new one". When you type "Shinichi" into the computer, often (or at least mine does) often takes it as "Shi"-"Ni"-"Chi", 3 hiragana (well, furigana in this case?) and pops up the appropriate selectable kanji.
But if you write Shin'ichi, it wouldn't have this problem. Well, at least NJStar never did; not too sure about the IME I have now...
They're both perfectly valid romanji, but I guess that Shin'ichi is just...easier when it comes to accuracy. (Again, I'm only speaking on my experience with IMEs; your mileage may vary.)
However, like Ysabet and Icka, I'm just far too lazy with the apostrophe. ^^;
