Author's Notes: This is now technically about 25 minutes late, but I hope that's okay. :) *goes off to read everybody elses* Also, sorry if it feels choppy. ^^;
There was a darkness overtaking him. A darkness unnoticeable, intangible as most darkness was, but still it was slowly overtaking him. It devoured his soul, slowly, bit by bit, with every notice he set out and every jewel that he touched.
Every jewel that was not Pandora.
And he was afraid, that if he did not stop soon, that if he did not find what he was searching for, the darkness would consume him completely, and he would eternally be unable to escape it.
It was a fear he had been harboring for a long time, and one that was not at all unfounded. He had chosen, from the beginning, to work alone; the less people that were tainted by the dark, the better. But he had not been aware that by choosing to be alone, he had chosen for the darkness to consume him faster. Had not been aware, that by being alone, he had chosen to leave behind light.
And so, caught up in the fact of this as he was, he did not realize it as one night he neglected to check the roof before he slid onto it.
Did not notice as a shadow from an adjacent rooftop aimed, cocked, and fired.
The bullet hit him hard, and he started falling, backwards off his perch, but felt no pain.
‘What use is it to wear white,’ he found himself thinking cryptically instead, ‘if your insides are completely black?’
His fall seemed as if it lasted an eternity, but in fact must have been much shorter than that. He saw red-his own blood, in a dramatic liquid arch above him, but it did not register. Nothing registered; nothing mattered anymore. All that mattered was that he had been shot, and would never be able to find Pandora now.
And then he was caught. The impact of himself into warm arms forced him to register—an electric, shooting pain on his left side, but right below his ribs. He realized suddenly that while he had been falling, he had been falling backwards and thus onto the roof, as opposed to off. And he realized that he was being held in someone’s arms.
The amount of blood he was loosing and the pain he felt darkened his vision for a moment. When he could see again, he looked up through half-open eyes. He saw something bright, a shock of yellow.
Are you my light? He asked. Will you protect me?
Surprisingly, he heard his light answer.
“Yes,” his light answered, and reassured, Kaito allowed his eyes to drift all the way shut.
He would not be alone any longer.
