Summary:
"It was heart-wrenching, they all agreed, to see how much effort he put into pleasing the other boy, only to receive apathy or sharp looks of irritation--- a small part of him was laughing in the background. If anyone was to be pitied, it was his poor hapless detective..."

------

Shinichi was painfully aware of how indulgent he to the thief.

No, not a thief, he corrected mentally. There was no solid evidence that Kaito was that thief, much less a thief at all. No self-respecting detective could make a verdict from baseless conjecture. Well, no detective except for Hakuba, but the Holmes-obsessed guy wasn't exactly all there, efficiently negating any accusations he might make. He thought that Akako was a witch for god's sake!

Yes, Kaitou was a damn good magician, yes he was an avid Kid supporter, yes he tended to be missing on nights with a full moon, and yes, he did manage to accumulate suspicious injuries, but that wasn't enough evidence to convict him. If such little things could be considered incriminating, Kaito might as well have been Kudo Shinichi's current alias. He looked like Shinichi, sounded like Shinichi, was every bit as smart as Shinichi (loath as he was to admit it), and disappeared often enough to have been secretly working as Shinichi, but he was not Shinichi. Who was to say Kaito was Kid for the same vaguely similar reasons? Of course Shinichi had undeniable proof that Kaito was not Kudo Shinichi. He was fairly certain he was himself, not that that meant much of anything this point, but it was factual enough. There wasn't anything so defining against Kaito being Kid, but still... Kaito may have annoying, but was a good person at heart, and therefore deserved the benefit of the doubt. At least that's what Shinichi told himself...

Kuroba Kaito was without a doubt Kuroba Kaito, and that's all the evidence Shinichi needed. He was too far gone, way beyond letting go even if Kaito was Kid, to care. If he were suddenly to vanish, Shinichi knew he wouldn't, couldn't continue to exist. The obnoxious moron who'd unknowingly managed to worm his way into his heart was now the only attachment he had to the world.

Shinichi's friends, Kaito's friends, all of the other individuals who frequently had contact with the pair, none of them understood it. Kaito's inner spirit glowed with infectious warmth. He was cheerful, endearing, and positively bursting with affection every way, ignoring strange ways he chose to show it. He constantly clung to the detective with a fierce devotion, refusing to let the other go. It was heart-wrenching, they all agreed, to see how much effort he put into pleasing the other boy, only to receive apathy or sharp looks of irritation. He showered Shinichi with gifts and hugs, chirping happily about anything and everything, desperately tying to keep his attention, dragging him off on romantic dates, silly adventures, or to see once in a lifetime events in a doomed attempt to please his unwilling 'lover'. Nothing could bring a smile to the other boy's face, save when Kaito made some error of fantastic mistake, completely humiliating himself. It seemed that the only reward he received for his efforts was that Shinichi put up only mild protest, letting his companion sweep him off into whatever form of madness he could concoct.

Those who knew Shinichi best occasionally tried to disused others of the notion that he was a heartless bastard, though they were more often then not met with unwavering disbelief. Yes, they'd concede that he seemed cold and clinical only appearing to care about his work as a detective, but he really was a gigantic sap deep down. He merely suffered from a lack of social skills and had no idea how to respond to the situation Kaito abruptly presented. He didn't have the knowledge or experience to deal with such a concentrated dose of affection after being neglected for so long, and they assured everyone he'd eventually come out of his shell. But as time went on, even they began to doubt themselves.

No one ever confronted Kaito or Shinichi about the apparent disinterest, but if they had, they might have surprised to learn the boy was hardly as distant as he led them to believe. It wasn't that Shinichi didn't care, quite the opposite in fact, he cared too much...

The detective was scared. Scared that he'd lose Kaito the same way he lost his parents, Ran, and even the Shonen-Tantei. If he wasn't hiding himself from assassins, he was trapped in a web of lies to keep them out of harm's way. Anyone who got to close was inevitably hurt, and so he kept to himself, unwilling to let them see or understand the horrors that followed him. They were hidden behind every corner, poised to strike at every turn, and his friends and family didn't deserve to be trapped in them as well. They were happy and content, blissfully unaware of the darkness around him, a he was glad for it, no matter how much it hurt. The idea of literally loosing someone was much more terrifying then having them hate him, and so he watched in grim satisfaction as they all pulled away, each and everyone of them only briefly appearing not ad then out of some misguided obligation to pretend they still cared. That is, everyone but Kaito.

As far as Shinichi could tell, Kaito was either too oblivious to notice, or too insane to care. If he were a betting man, he'd say the latter. Sometimes, only in the rarest of instances, he could swear he saw the same darkness that plagued him. He almost let himself believe that deeply hidden behind those laughing blue eyes was the same hell that consumed him. In those moments he felt that somehow Kaito was the only one who would ever truly able to understand him, comforting him in a way Shinichi hadn't though possible. Then, as soon as it had come, the understanding was gone; Kaito was just the same joyous lunatic he'd been before. But for that illusion, the barest sliver of hope that he might not be alone, he let his barriers shatter, leaving the magician to do as he wished. It was pathetic and infuriating, but nevertheless he was content to let the boy wrap him around his little finger, just so long as he stayed...

------

Kaito didn't say it out loud, but he knew the pain in a way far too intimately for his own taste. Everything, the fear and the lies, the shadows that crept in the darkness, the anguish eating away inside him, he understood. He wished he didn't need to pretend, that he could share the burning hells with his detective, but it was better that he didn't. If Shinichi knew (and instinctively he probably did, choosing for whatever reason to ignore it), was confronted by the reality that he was Kid, realizing the risk of death he took every time he donned his cape, the other boy would go mad with worry. There was no doubt he'd irrational find a way to blame himself, it was just such a Shinichi thing to do.... Comforted by it in a twisted way; that Shinichi cared about him so much he would be destroyed if he knew, Kaito reveled in the perverse pleasure. If his lover wanted to let himself be fooled, he was fine with it. Now if he could just ignore the small taint of guilt....

It was surreal the way the detective would let him do whatever he pleased. To think someone with so much conviction would become nothing more than a rag-doll with merely a touch. Though he'd complain, it was only for show. Shinichi wasn't one for public displays of affection, and Kaito respected that. To an extent anyway, prodding his lover was just too much fun sometimes, guilt be damned...

When they were alone Shinichi would instantly drop all of his barriers and inhibitions as if they never existed, and knew he had too much power. He was wrong to take advantage of the other boy's state, freely given as it was, and yet he couldn't stop himself. Whatever whims of fantasy or crazy ideas, Shinichi would gladly subject himself to them all. Anything, everything, he would give whatever he could to please the thief, only asking that he remain with him, staying by his side when he woke, adamant that he not leave.

If the rest of the world thought he was being used, well, wouldn't they be in for a shock? Whatever they thought or said, it didn't matter. At the end of the day when his love was flushed, quivering under his touch, he almost felt pride at deceiving them all. The stolen touches and heated kisses were addictive, and was the sex positively intoxicating. The sad pleading eyes and soft whimpers were too inviting, the desperate embraces, and helpless begging pushed him over the edge. When Shinichi deliriously whispered how in love his was or moaned his name, a small part of him was laughing in the background. If anyone was to be pitied, it was his poor hapless detective...

------

A/N: Ok... that was... What the fuck? Even I'm confused, and I wrote it! Poor insane Shinichi... Though I have to admit, I kind of like my distorted version of their 'universe'. Now that I look at it, I probably need to work on the whole 'thought organization' thing...

O rly?

I liked it! But, he's Shinichi in this, right, not Conan? Because at the beginning, where he was saying how Kaito could even be Shinichi, it sounded like Shinichi was still gone. Other than that, it was great.
