Summary: Kaito starts with Chapter One: "Proximity breeds affection." A Gay AU story.
Rating: uh... PG
Word count: <490 and >500
“Proximity breeds affection,” Kaito announced, dropping a large stack of books on the table with a loud thump.
Shinichi eyed the stack apprehensively. “I’m actually not sure that’ll work in this case.”
“Of course it’ll work!” Kaito scoffed. “All we have to do is put them near each other—”
“—and keep them from killing each other in the process, right?” Shinichi finished gloomily. “I still think you’re nuts.”
“Nonsense! It’ll work like a charm!”
“Like I said. Nuts.”
Kaito dropped into a chair, pulled it up to the table, and opened a book. Shinichi was absolutely no help at all. He was so pessimistic, so convinced that their (OK, so it was really his) plan was doomed to failure. It may be a stretch, Kaito admitted that freely to himself, but he was determined to make it work. Besides, another week of sitting through Aoko and Akako’s screaming matches—followed by a frosty silence so thick it could suffocate—and he really would go crazy. Crazier, at least.
“Look,” Kaito said, shoving the text over to Shinichi. “It says so right here. “The most effective beginning strategy in matchmaking is simple proximity. It has been shown that familiarity really does breed affection.” See? Simple!”
““Along with familiarity,”” Shinichi read slowly, ““it is necessary to ‘talk up,’ if you will, the other person. This may include such tactics as: 1) mentioning subject A to subject B, 2) pointing out mutual interests or hobbies, and 3) complimenting subject A to subject B. This works best if done subtly and over time.””
He paused and looked up. “Kaito, you don’t do subtle. Maybe you should pick a different plan.”
“No no no no no,” Kaito said, waving his hands around wildly. “You’ve got to start at chapter one and work your way through it. It says so in the introduction.”
Shinichi pushed his glasses farther up his nose with one finger, an oddly mature gesture on his young face. “Why are we trusting this book again?”
“Do you know anything about matchmaking?”
“. . . no.”
“My point exactly,” Kaito finished with satisfaction.
Shinichi sighed to himself and admitted defeat. It wasn’t like anything Kaito could do would actually hurt the girls. It wasn’t altogether surprising that Kaito could be such a good phantom thief and such a bad matchmaker. The skill sets were completely different, after all: magicians were loud and flashy, relying on distraction to pull off a trick. Matchmaking was a lot more subtle, working behind the scenes to get the job done.
Or was it? Magic—and Kaitou Kid—relied primarily on distraction. Be loud enough, flashy enough, and nobody would notice that you had just stolen the jewel. Maybe he wasn’t giving Kaito enough credit.
. . . Or maybe not, Shinichi thought with a grin as he watched Kaito read Matchmaking 101 with a completely absorbed expression. Either way, it should be interesting to watch.

Kaito: Now, you two try.
